Shapton® ceramic sharpening stones combine extremely fast cutting action with low maintenance. Shapton engineers have completed thousands of hours of research and focused their efforts in sharpening down to three basic elements: Surface Uniformity; Stone Stability; and Abrasive Quality. They have carefully developed these stones to work well with a wide variety of steels.
Shapton offers two lines of sharpening stones: the Ceramic on Tempered Glass (GlassStone) Series, and the Professional Series. The GlassStone series features a layer of the highest quality ceramic sharpening matrix bonded to a polished tempered glass base, whereas the Professional series features a homogenious ceramic sharpening matrix. Both series have been designed for rapid sharpening and low maintenance. They do not need to be soaked in water; simply splash some on and start sharpening. Like all waterstones, they should be flattened before each use. These stones measure 210mm x 70mm (8.27in. x 2.76in.); the GlassStones are 10mm (~0.5in) thick, and the Professional stones are 15mm (0.59 in) thick.
What does Shapton offer that is better than the competition? A complete sharpening system. Shapton now produces products to cover these three bases: Precision lapping systems to maintain uniformity; Stable holding systems for the abrasives; and the highest quality abrasives on the market today.
Shapton offers two lapping systems: the diamond on glass lapping plate, and the diamond on bronze lapping plate. The Diamond on glass lapping plate is our biggest seller and it is designed to create laboratory grade of uniform flatness across a range of stones from 500 to 30,000. Shapton's Diamond on bronze lapping plate is two sided. one side is for lapping ceramic abrasive and the other is for reference flattening steel. This plate is manufactured to extremely high tolerance and and can be resurfaced. This plate is usually chosen by woodworking schools production shops and machine shops where lots of people are sharpening and or lapping everyday.
Sharpening Pond and Stone Holders
Introducing Shapton's New Sharpening Pond and stone holders.
The "Pond" is made of two layers of tempered glass laminated together and held in a heavy rubber frame. The holder is a laminated glass block wrapped in a thin layer of rubber. Together these pieces create an incredibly stable sharpening foundation.
The holders can be used separately, in pairs and stacked. The holders are designed for either the Glass Stone series or the Pro series. The holder will also accept the GDLP (Glass Diamond Lapping Plate) Use this setup for rock solid sharpening.
